In Scotland, you can offer allergy and
hay fever support to patients within the
NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service.
Depending on the patient’s symptoms,
you can go down the usual pathway
and offer advice and supply an OTC
treatment, or you can offer a small range
of POMs through the Pharmacy First
PGDs.
Four PGDs have been developed for
NHS Pharmacy First Scotland for the
treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis
(hay fever). These PGDs expand the
treatments available to patients with
hay fever symptoms when visiting
your pharmacy and can be used,
where appropriate, when current
standard treatments have failed to
control a patient’s symptoms. Each
PGD allows for a supply of up to six
months treatment and pharmacists
should consider choosing the most
cost-effective product that is clinically
appropriate. The PGDs available are for

valid without authorisation by the
Local Health Board in which they are
operating. Local contractors should
access their locally adopted versions
of the PGDs via their Local Health
Board PGD pages.
PGDs for the symptoms of hay fever
include:
• Azelastine hydrochloride 0.1%
nasal spray
• Fluticasone furoate 27.5
micrograms per dose nasal spray
• Fluticasone propionate 50
micrograms per dose nasal spray
• Mometasone 50 micrograms per
dose nasal spray
