Your questions
about dispensing
fees and prescription
charges answered by
Mailbox Caroline Pond.
You all know how much emphasis I put on the importance of dispensing fees in providing
a healthy core profit into the dispensary so when I received this query about sip feeds
and endorsing flavours, I thought it would be useful to share my advice as it is an income
opportunity which is lost if you don’t know how to process these prescriptions to your
advantage. Here is the advice I shared.
A. No, as the Ensure Plus has been prescribed with
an unspecified flavour rather than a direction to
supply multiple flavours.
Only where the prescription specifically orders
mixed, assorted or various flavours, and several

line. Can I dispense multiple flavours and
claim for multiple dispensing fees?
The ‘flavour not specified’ listing is actually a way
for prescribers to order a product which is available
in multiple flavours, without specifying at the time
of prescribing precisely which flavour is required.
This enables the patient or the dispenser to decide
which (single) flavour may be appropriate.
So, if we want to supply, and endorse for more than
one flavour sip feed must be prescribed as assorted
flavours. In this instance you will receive a fee for
each flavour endorsed in the margin.
In the same theme of questions regarding
prescription supply, I also received a number of
questions regarding multiple prescription charges.
This is of course, important to get right, as a missed
charge not collected will still be deducted from your
drug statement and result in financial loses to the
dispensary.
Q. How many prescription charges A. Where different formulations or presentations

prescription charges would be payable unless the
patient was entitled to exemption or remission from
the charge.
