A STAY AT LION QUAYS RESORT AND A DAY ON A NARROWBOAT
Planned back in May when life was uncertain, the day finally dawned
when a group of Rotarians, partners and friends arrived at Lion Quays
Resort, Moreton, near Chirk. The weather was splendid as we sat around
as everyone arrived prior to going to a meal at a nearby Restaurant.
The next morning it was an early start after breakfast to arrive at Trevor
Quay for 9.00 a.m. Here all boarded one of the three narrowboats whilst
the men had some brief navigational guidance – not that it was very
effective!!
The first challenge was to steer over the aqueduct – not very
reassuring for those who don’t like heights as there was little
between the boat and the edge but there were splendid
views.
The speed limit is 4 mph but this caused a problem for some – not least
other boats!! One lady harangued all three boats as she passed – but
she felt better afterwards… Then came some narrow parts where one
had to give way – if one could stop in time… Then came the tunnels –
check if one could see the end
or another light and then hope
for the best. At least we had
engines and didn’t have to ‘leg
it’ as we would have still been
there,
Finally we reached the
Poachers Pocket where we had
to turn round – straightforward
for some but not for others…
and then moor for lunch and a welcome drink.
No – not that way! Lunch…
And then it was the return journey to arrive back for 4.00p.m. Yet another meal at a local restaurant before returning for
evening drinks and bed. All were homeward bound the next morning.
Our thanks to Robert for giving us the idea and David for the planning and organising and for the weather being perfect.
