559 Christopher (‘Chris’) GREENAWAY (1935- ) (Inducted 5.2.2001; President 2007-08; resigned
January 2019.) Glass Technologist. Recently retired ‘Head of Glass’ at
Dudley College. He was in charge of the International Glass Centre at
Brierley Hill - a centre of excellence for studies in glassmaking - for 15 years
until retiring in 2000. Brought up in the Stourbridge area he appears to
have spent his working life involved in the local glass industry. During the
1960s he was assistant works manager of the Stourbridge Glass Company’s
Audnam glassworks. This produced high quality crystal glassware under
the brand name ‘Tudor Crystal’. It became so celebrated that in 1972 the
Stourbridge Glass Company changed its name to Tudor Crystal Limited.
Chris progressed in the business to become a director and then Managing Director. In about
1983, against his advice, the firm was sold but Chris stayed on as MD for another 12 months. He
then joined Stuart Crystal for a short time as General Manager of its Pengam Works, South
Wales. (Pengam produced glassware blanks that were sent to Stourbridge for finishing.) From
there he moved to Dudley Council for a year, (helping curate its world-famous glass collection?)
before becoming ‘Head of Glass’ at Dudley College.
560 John STRINGER (1946- ) (Inducted 23.4.2001; left 7.2004.) Chief Housing Officer. Chief Housing
Officer of Dudley MBC from 1997 until retiring in 2005, during which period
he was responsible for the management of 24,000 council houses. He
trained as a quantity surveyor and worked in the construction industry
before joining Dudley Council in 1991 as General Manager of the Property
Services team. On retirement he moved from Stourbridge to Craven Arms,
Shropshire. He soon became a board member of the South Shropshire
Housing Association and Chairman of Total Response Limited, which repairs
and maintains the properties of Shropshire Housing Group as well as local
authority and private clients.
561 Robert (‘Bob’/’Rob’) Anthony HOWELL [birth names Anthony Robert]
(1950- ) (Inducted 18.2.2002; President 2010-11; made a Paul Harris
Fellow 2015; left in 2022.) Toolmaking/ Presswork. MD of H&H Tool &
Engineering Ltd and H&H Products Ltd, with works at Shelah Road,
Halesowen. ‘Tools & Engineering’ was incorporated into ‘Products’ in
2005. The works transferred to Coombs Road, Halesowen in 2007 when
Robert sold his interest in the business, but he continued as a director until
retiring in 2011. His son Adrian continued as a director for a further 5
years. Robert was born and raised in Dudley. In the 1980s his home was
at Amblecote, but he now lives at Buttonbridge near Bewdley, Worcestershire. He was proud
to have been a Scout and Venture Scout with the 7th Dudley troop, and therefore pleased that
the Club has supported the troop in recent years. He was actively involved in the Club’s
community service and fundraising activities from soon after becoming a member.
562 James (‘Jamie’) Thomas PLOWMAN (1971- ) (Inducted 3.11.2003; President 2009-10; left July
2013.) Mortgage Consultant; later Business Consultant. He joined the club
as Sales Director and Mortgage advisor with Yellow Loans Limited,
Willenhall, but this was taken over by S J Berry Properties Limited of Rugby
in 2004. He resigned as a director in 2005 and set up as a financial advisor,
accountant and book-keeper to a number of companies from Kent to
Liverpool, specialising in clubs, bars, leisure and similar. He has been
involved in several company start-ups and short-lived ventures, which
include Lakeside Aquatics because of his interest in koi carp. He now
operates as P1 Accounting Services, JTP Assets, and Flatpack Furniture
