in the kitchens of the nearby Bon Appetit restaurant. He now has an allotment and grows his
own vegetables. He is an active freemason and 8 times Master of masonic lodges.
568 David Stephen LOFTUS (1962- ) (Inducted 21.7.2008; still a member at
2022.) Architectural Metalwork. Commercial Director of Glazzard (Dudley)
Ltd, Netherton, specialist architectural and structural steel fabricators.
Brought up in Old Hill, he joined Glazzard Iron & Steel as it then was,
straight from school at age 16, starting as a trainee draughtsman but
spending time on the shop floor and on site. He attended Dudley Technical
College on day release for an HNC in Structural Design and again later for 3
years for a professional qualification to join the Institute of Industrial
Managers. He moved from the drawing board to estimating and later
became Estimating Manager, then Commercial Manager, Senior Project Manager and finally
Commercial Director in July 2006 following the retirement of Roger Emery (club member #524).
The firm was voluntarily wound up in 2016 but continued in a smaller way as Glazzard Limited
at Windsor Works, Halesowen Road, Netherton until 2018 with Andrew Glazzard (member #558)
and David as directors. He was also a director with Andrew of the related design and technical
consultancy Windsor Survey & Construction Services Ltd from 2015 until it was voluntarily
wound up 2017. He has been a governor of Netherbrook Primary School, Netherton, since 1995
and Chair of the Governors since 2002. Both his daughter and son have been National, European
and World champions at Karate so David helps as an official at their Portway Shukokai Karate
Club in Blackheath.
569 Ian Nicoll WALDEN, OBE (1945- ) (Inducted 1.12.2008; President 2016-17; still a member at
2022; previously a member of Stanley Rotary Club, County Durham 1972-
74.) Museums. Director of the Black Country Living Museum and now
museums and heritage consultant. He was appointed first Director of the
Museum in September 1975, when it was simply a blank canvas. He
started the process of turning 26 acres of sewage farm, overgrown canal
basin and derelict land into the nationally and internationally renowned
tourist attraction and historical centre of excellence. It opened its doors in
1978 and during the first summer attracted almost 9,000 people. By the
time he retired as Chief Executive in August 2009, after nearly 34 years, he
had taken the number of visitors to 270,000 a year. For services to Urban Regeneration he was
awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours 1990.
He was a director of the West Midlands Area Museum Service 1976-2007 and Council
Member of the Museums Association 1988-94. Museums ran in his family: his father had been
Director of both Leicester and Glasgow City museums, and President of the Museums
Association; and his mother Director of Halifax Museum. Ian was born in Dundee, his mother’s
home town, but brought up in Leicester. He returned to Scotland to study mechanical
engineering at Queens College, Dundee, part of St Andrews University, on a scholarship from
ICI, where he graduated with First Class Honours in 1966. On graduation he joined ICI and
worked at Billingham and Immingham, including underground in the Billingham anhydrite mine.
He then joined Petfoods at its Melton Mowbray factory, managing the dog food production line
... where it was necessary to regularly test the quality of the product by tasting it! Then he was
appointed Keeper: Industry and Technology at the Beamish Open Air Museum in Co. Durham in
September 1970, and was there for 5 years before moving to the Black Country Living Museum.
After leaving the Museum he has continued as a Consultant in museums and heritage. His
projects have included the establishment of the Bible Society’s Faith Heritage Centre at Bala,
North Wales, featuring the Mary Jones World exhibition, and preservation of an historic
Highland farm township at Auchindrain near Inveraray, Scotland. He was a director of Ironbridge
Railway Trust 2011-16. His passion for cars and motorcycles led him to serve as a trustee (2006-
