SECTION 3: NATIONAL RECOGNITION DAYS

               Carole Robertson Memorial Day

                                                                                              th
Our celebration of Carole Robertson was a weeklong event occurring September 21 – 26 , 2020. The weeks
activities culminated with a family scavenger hunt and virtual Jack and Jill Day program on September 26,
2020. Our goal was to facilitate family activities and discussions throughout the week on the life of Carole
Robertson and the many sacrifices made by those that have come before us in the fight for justice and equality.

We distributed “Swag Bags” to each family that included the following to help facilitate discussions:
             1. The Watson’s Go to Birmingham Book
             2. The Watson’s Go to Birmingham Movie,
             3. Family Discussion Questions for The Watson’s Go to Birmingham
             4. Carole Robertson Coloring Book
             5. Stained Glass Craft Set (to represent the 16th Street Baptist Church).

Throughout the week our families read and discussed the novel by, Christopher Paul Curtis, an African
American author. Although fictional, the story provides a great background of the historical events surrounding
the 1963 16th Street Baptist church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. This racially targeted bombing took the
lives of 4 young girls, including our beloved Carole Robertson.

Our families were tasked to read the novel and work through study questions and engage in dialogue with each
other on the racial and civil unrest in American during this time period. The younger children were provided

with coloring books and a stained-glass window craft set to represent the 16 Street Baptist Church to help
them pay tribute to Carole Robertson and the other victims. The families then watched the movie together.

Our Carole Robertson Memorial culminated with a 20-minute zoom meeting on Jack and Jill Day where we
watched a Carole Robertson tribute, announced the winners of the family scavenger hunt and provided a video
collage of the week’s activities. The North Texas Chapter was able to effectively facilitate in depth discussions
with our families on racial and civil unrest in the 1960’s while paying tribute to Carole Robertson.
