National Black Family Day
The North Texas Chapter uses Black Family Day to revisit the accomplishments of the chapter
during the programming year, including the recognition of Distinguished Mother and Father of
the year. The first Black Family Day was held in 1987 in May and was mandated by the National
Executive Board under the leadership of Dr. Eva Wanton to celebrate Black Family Day with our
families. This mandated program for all chapters is during the first Sunday in May. Our local
st
Black Family Day activity is on May 1 – 2nd 2021 at Twin Cove Park in Flower Mound, TX.
This weekend family campout and barbeque will be a capstone event for our programming year.
During this event, we will share accomplishments of our chapter and welcome new families. It
will also serve as a time to celebrate our graduating seniors. As our final chapter activity, we will
leverage the fact that May is Mental Health Month and educate our chapter on mental health in
the African American community.
The Father’s Auxiliary will barbecue. The grade groups will have camping classes and a Griot
will visit to tell stories by the campfire. Additionally, families will participate in canoeing,
kayaking, swimming in the lake and a host of other activities. Families can choose to spend the
night in cabins to make the most of an outdoor, fulfilled celebration of Jack and Jill and the
Black Family.
