Chapter 1 Grandpa gets stuck.
Harry, Annabel, James and Ellie were playing indoors in front of a roaring fire
because it was a really cold day in December. Snow had been falling and the

gang had been planning a tobogganing trip in the afternoon. They were all
excited as they had new toboggans and were really looking forward to trying
them out. Granny was in the kitchen baking cakes for their tea which would be
a welcome treat when they come in from the cold.

Just then the telephone rings and Granny answers. “Hello”, she says.

“It’s me”, says Grandpa. “I was on my way up to the farm to feed the animals
when I drove into deep snow and I am now stuck. It is snowing hard and I am

worried that I might not get out”. “Can you help?”

“Of course, I will put the gang onto it straight away”, said Granny.

Granny went into the warm sitting room and asked everyone to listen carefully.
“Grandpa is stuck in the snow somewhere on the way up to the farm. He is
worried he may never get out because it is snowing hard and the pickup is
gradually disappearing. What are we to do?” asked granny.

Harry took charge and said that “we will have to use Grandpa’s tractor to rescue
poor grandpa”. Everyone agreed and so off they ran to the hall to put on warm

waterproof clothes. Ellie said “don’t forget the tractor key”. “Well said”, the
others said together. “I may be the littlest, but I am not stupid”, said Ellie.

Granny brought them the tractor key. “Wait while I put a hot drink in a thermos
and pack some biscuits. You might need them”, said Granny. “No time for
that”, said Annabel, “we need to rescue Grandpa.”
