Harry put his foot on the clutch and slid one of the levers forwards just as he
had seen Grandpa do it. As he released the clutch the tractor moved forward.
James took the steering wheel and directed the tractor out onto the road. Ellie
suggested that the girls should work out which is the windscreen wiper as it was
very difficult to see where they were going. Meanwhile Harry looked for the
light switch. James continued to steer the tractor up the road.
The snow on the ground was getting deeper by the moment and Ellie suggested
that Harry should put the tractor into a faster gear so that they get to Grandpa
sooner. Harry agreed and started to move various levers. First the front loader
went up in the air, next the tractor suddenly went backwards causing the girls to
crash into the windscreen. Then Harry pushed the right lever and the tractor
sped down the road. James was finding this new speed a bit too exciting and
asked Annabel to help him steer.
It wasn’t long before they could see Grandpa waving franticly up ahead. James
steered and Harry slowed the tractor down finally bringing it to a halt just short

animals will be very hungry”.
Grandpa attached a chain to the car and to the tractor. He put the tractor into
reverse and it moved slowly backwards. At first it seemed to slip in the snow

the snow, Harry disconnected the chain and they set off for the farm.
The tractor chugged along the road but when it came to the hill, it started to
shudder. Grandpa switched on the 4-wheel drive and then the tractor climbed
the hill smoothly.
When they arrived at the farm, everyone rushed into the barn to feed the cows.
When the cows saw everyone, they mooed loudly to say that they were very
hungry. Grandpa cut some strings on a bale of hay and then everyone took
bunches of hay to give to the cows. They went backwards and forwards with
hay until the cow feeder was full. James went to check the water trough.
“it’s iced over”, he said.
“I’ll fetch a hammer for you”, said grandpa. Grandpa disappeared into the shed
and soon returned with a hammer which he gave to James. James hit the ice.
Bits of ice splintered but it did not break the thick frozen sheet. James hit it a
