LESSON 1

Our Broken Relationships: Genesis 3:1-23

Learning Goals: The group will recognize that sin is the reason behind our broken relationships

with God, with others, and even with the created order.

Preparation:

1. Read through the passage daily for the week prior. Ask the Holy Spirit to give you insight

into it.

2. Pray for the learners. Ask the Lord to make them receptive to the Word.

3. Pre-select a news article about violent crime, religious persecution, or environmental

crimes. We recommend having it be as local and recent as possible, and that it be printed.

Welcome: The seats will be arranged in a circle to facilitate conversation.

Opening:

1. Opening prayer (2-3 minutes)

2. Give the students an overview of the four lessons of the unit. (5 minutes)

Presenting:

1. Read (or summarize if it is lengthy) the article selected. (5 minutes)

2. The leader can read the scripture passage or ask a student to do so. (5 minutes)

3. Point out the three areas of broken relationship within the passage. (10 minutes)

a. Broken relationship with God (vs. 10)

b. Broken relationship with each other (vs. 12)

c. Broken relationship with creation (vs. 17-20)
