“Sir,” said Carl, “I’m not afraid to be up here. I’m not afraid to be alone, and I’m not afraid
of falling.” The old bird looked at Carl suspiciously for a moment. He was trying to think of
something to say when Carl asked him.
”And what, may I ask, are you doing up here?”
“Well, I’m trying to get you to go back into the jungle, where I think you should be,” said
the parrot plainly. “Why, you should be afraid! The world is a very dangerous place, and
everything is bad! Everyone should be afraid. Afraid, I tell you!”
“Afraid of what?” questioned Carl.
