Carl had not noticed, but a lemur named Jaxx had scurried up the pole. Jaxx

was standing at the top of the pole, looking down at Carl and purring.

Finally, he asked Carl, “What did that grouchy, old bird say to you?”

“He said that I should be afraid to stay here and that I should go back into the

jungle where he thinks I belong.”
