SO30213 Environmental Management
Supplementary Subject Social Studies, Religion and Culture
Secondary 5 Semester 1 Time Allocation 20 hours 0.5 credit
This course introduces the students to managing the environment which might be the most
important thing humanity has to do over the next century and beyond. It will give students opportunities
to develop knowledge and understanding of different aspects of the course. They will learn about agriculture
and its effect on the environment, water and its management, managing natural hazards, the atmosphere
and human activities, and human population among others. Including different phenomena, definition and
vocabulary and other key concepts. The students will thus have knowledge and understanding of managing
the environment and will be equipped with 21st century skills.
The teaching procedures introduced in this course focus on practice handling information and
solving problems, develop investigation and evaluation skills, and practice drawing and interpreting diagrams
including graphs. They will be given the chance to explore and experience actual learning situations in
nearby areas and apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.
The course also enables students to instill the desirable characteristics, including love of nation,
religion and king, honesty and integrity, self – discipline, avidity for learning, observance of principles of
Sufficiency Economy Philosophy in one’s way of life, dedication and commitment to work, cherishing Thai-
ness, public-mindedness and health and well-balance will be strengthened and manifested in the life of
the learners.
Learning Outcomes
1. Describe and explain the composition of soils as a medium for plant growth.
2. Describe the different types of agriculture and discuss techniques used to increase agricultural yields.
3. Describe and explain the impact of agricultural practices on the environment and people and
strategies for sustainable agriculture.
4. Describe and interpret the water cycle.
5. Describe the sources of freshwater used by people and compare the availability of safe drinking
water in different parts of the world and discuss the sources of water pollution and the impact of
pollution of freshwater on people and on the environment.
6. Describe and evaluate multipurpose dam projects.
7. Discuss and explain strategies for improving water quality.
8. Describe different types of natural hazard, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tropical
cyclones, flooding and drought and explain the distribution of these natural hazards and relate
them to the Earth’s structure and impacts of natural hazards on people and the environment.
9. Describe and evaluate the strategies for managing the impacts of natural hazards before, during
and after an event.
10. Describe the structure and composition of the atmosphere and explain the greenhouse effect.
11. Describe and explain the causes of atmospheric pollution and its impact on people and the
environment and explain the strategies used by individuals, governments and the international
community to reduce the effects of atmospheric pollution.
12. Describe changes in human populations in terms of birth rates, death rates and migration
and population structure in MEDCs and LEDCs and evaluate strategies for managing human
population size.
