The nature of acids and bases

                   • Acids in our daily life:

Citrus fruits contain Citric Acid Citric acid

               Vinegar contains acetic acid

The sting of ants is due to formic acid

Aspirin is acetyl salicylic acid used as analgesic.

                                                                        Aspirin

                   • Bases in our daily life:

Sodium hydroxide base is used in making soaps and detergents

Baking soda consists of sodium bicarbonate

               Antacids contain magnesium hydroxide

                                              • They are ionic compounds (electrolytes).

                                              • Sour in taste.
              Properties of Acids:
                                              • They are corrosive.

                                              • They turn blue litmus paper red.

                                              • They are ionic compounds (electrolytes).

                                              • Slippery.

Properties of Bases: • Bitter taste.
