Generic Name: Promethazine
Brand names: Allersoothe Elixir, Phenergran,
Side effects/precautions:
CNS depressive effects: sedation and impaired performance. CNS stimulating effects: anxiety,
hallucinations, appetite stimulation, muscle dyskinesias, activation of epileptogenic foci, nervousness,
tremor, insomnia, agitation, and irritability. Anti-cholinergic effects: dryness of the eyes, mouth and
nose, blurred vision, urinary hesitancy and retention, constipation and tachycardia.
Gastrointestinal effects: Dry mouth, epigastric distress, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting,
constipation, diarrhoea. Nervous system effects: Sedation, restlessness, dizziness, lassitude,
incoordination, fatigue. Ocular effects: Blurred vision.

Interactions:
Alcohol, barbiturates, hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anxiolytic sedatives, and neuroleptics
antimuscarinic drugs (atropine, tricyclic antidepressants).
Interactions between promethazine and monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants
(TCAs)
Reasons for interactions:
Enhancement of the sedative effects of CNS depressants. Additive antimuscarinic actions with
antimuscarinic drugs. Prolongation and intensification of the anticholinergic and CNS depressive
effects on interaction with monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).
