               Generic Name: Lorazepam

               Brand names: Ativan

               Side effects/precautions:
               Withdrawal should be gradual as there may be a build up of dependance (4wk-4mth suggested). As a
               benzodiazepine, lorazepam may further trigger depression as well as symptoms in schizophrenic
               patients. impraired respiratory function. epiepsy. possible abuse. impaired use of machinery and
               driving. dizziness, sedation, cotton mouth, eye function disturbances.

               Interactions:

               Use of this drug with alcohol or CNS depressants should be avoided. It is recommended that patients
               be observed for altered responses when benzodiazepines and anticonvulsants are prescribed
               together, and that serum level monitoring of the drug.

               Reasons for interactions:

               The benzodiazepines, including Ativan, produce additive CNS depressant effects when
               coadministered with other medications which themselves produce CNS depression.
