Pandemic Outbreak: Resilience of Hotel Industry
HOTEL AS A QUARANTINE CENTRE
The Malaysian government has imposed a mandatory 14 - day quarantine period for all Malaysians who are
returning to the country from 3rd April 2020 to isolate the possibility of imported Covid- 19 cases. This creates a
need for complete quarantine centers to ensure full compliance with home quarantine.
MAH was approached by MOTAC to find hotels at all entrances and the list topped 10 000 rooms with the
Government providing RM 150 per room per night, complete with 3 meals. As of 12th April 2020, the list had
grown to more than 23 000 rooms and about 12 000 quarantined Malaysians. Even revenue from this is not
expected to survive the industry but will help the participating hotels as there is almost no income during the
MCO.
It can be concluded that, currently hotel industry is facing the hardest
time during the pandemic outbreaks. This situation is expected to last
till Sept - December.
