Third-party introductions are a blessing for people
who may have difficulty meeting others; they’re like
personal recommendations. If you see someone you’d
like to meet, ask your host or a mutual friend to
introduce you. But don’t leave things to chance.
Instead, ask your introducer to say your name, perhaps
say where you’re from and what you do for a living or
something else memorable about you, and put it in an
interesting way. “Ainslie, this is Adrian. He’s one of
Cape Town’s leading church designers” will come off a
lot better than “Ainslie, this is Adrian. He got soaked
coming here, didn’t you, Adrian?”
Open and Closed Fields
It doesn’t always work like that, though. At times
you will see someone you’d like to meet in a public

open field setting,” like an airport, shopping mall,
supermarket, or a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop. For
most of us, this can be daunting.
