                                         • Greed and violence, distrust


                                            and spiritual apathy (lack of


                                            interest in spiritual things),


                                            were eating out the very heart



                                            of the nation.


                   20. By their hatred of the Romans, and


                          national and spiritual pride, they tried


                          to maintain a reputation for sanctity by


                          scrupulous attention to the ceremonies


                          of religion.





                   21. They studied the prophecies without


                          spiritual insight and interpreted it to fit


                          into their own selfish plans for worldly


                          and national greatness and overlooked
