12. i. The same hopes upon worldly and
national greatness that they so
desired was turned into outward
service to God. It became a “form of
godliness” (2 Timothy 3:5).
ii. Their obedience was not prompted
by love, it was motived by
selfishness, and instead of being the
light of the world, they shut
themselves away from the world to
escape temptation to idolatry.
iii. The restriction God placed upon
their association with idolaters to
prevent them from conforming to
the rites and practices of the
heathen was used to build a wall of
separation between themselves
and those to whom they were to be
a light.
