               the  whole  city,  on  that  eventful  night,  given


               themselves  over  to  the  most  reckless


               carelessness  and  presumption,  a  state  of


               things upon which Cyrus calculated largely for


               the carrying out of his purpose. For on each


               side of the river, through the entire length of


               the  city,  were  walls  of  great  height,  and  of
