The nature of His pain and the cause of His
death was so excruciating that He ventured
to ask for relief, but only “if it is possible.” “If
it is possible for Me to save fallen humanity
by any other means Father, then let Me forgo
drinking this cup; but if they can be saved
only in this way, even this I am willing to
endure for them. I love them even more than
My own life.”
Christ was facing a death that involved no
nails or crown of thorns, but rather a “cup.”
The symbolic cup He held to His quivering
lips is defined in the most frightening
language in all of Scripture. It is “the wine of
the wrath of God, which is poured out
without mixture [full strength of undiluted
justice without mercy] into the cup of His
indignation” Revelation 14:10.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Christ entered
the dark realm of that “death” which is “the
[full] wages of sin” Romans 6:23.
