P. 69
Tremblingly He ventured into the mental and
emotional suffering which is inherent in
wrong doing, and which no human being has
ever had to face on his own account due to
the shielding veil of God’s mercy erected in
his conscience. It was erected as a buffer
between God’s love-infused righteousness
and man’s self-absorbed sinfulness, to
preserve him from sin’s full effect.
It is this bridgeless chasm that Jesus sensed
in His inmost soul was moving Him to the
wrong side, the side of darkness, by taking
the sin of humanity into Himself. “He [God
the Father] had made Him [God the Son] to
be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might
be made the righteousness of God in Him” 2
Corinthians 5:21.
But beholding our impending fate, Christ
breathes only submission: “If this cup may
not pass away from Me, except I drink it, Thy
will be done.”
