RESIDENT PROFILE
Glen Liddell
I was born in Mosman, Sydney in August 1945 at the
end of the Second World War. I am a descendant of
First Fleeters, Anthony Rope and Elizabeth Pulley.
They are reported to have had the first white child
conceived on Australian soil. They later married and
there is a reference to their wedding in Colleen
McCullough’s book Morgan’s Run. They were
accused of stealing a lamb for their wedding
breakfast but were released when the lamb was
found to be roadkill.
My only sibling Carol, and I had very loving parents,
so we had a wonderful happy childhood. Carol was
born almost 6 years before me in 1940, at the start
of the war and I came well after, as dad enlisted and
was sent to Darwin. I lost my sister to cancer over
20 years ago sadly.
After completing a secretarial course at the
Metropolitan Business College, I became a legal
secretary to a senior partner of a law firm. I was
living with my parents at Epping at the time. After
marrying at 21 my husband Dick and I bought our
first house in Epping walking distance from mum
and dad. We had two amazing children, Kerri who
lives in Perth, she just turned 55. Paul is 53 and lives
in Canberra, both Kerri and Paul have two children
each.
We moved to Brisbane for three years because of
Dick’s work in Data Processing. We returned to
Sydney where we built a home in Kellyville. Many
years later we moved to Dalby, a wheat growing area
in the north Darling Downs of Queensland. This was
a wonderful experience, first time living in a country
town. Dalby was so flat that when residents were
going for their driver’s license, they had to do hill
starts on the edge of the raised football oval, the only
hill available. We came back to Kellyville two years
later when Dick worked as Data Processing Manager
for Case IH Australasia.
Dick died on New Years Day 1988, the bicentennial
year, after a tragic accident. I was 42 at the time and
the kids 19 & 17. I was very blessed to have had him
in my life, we had a very happy and successful
marriage for just over 20 years.
My wonderful parents died a few weeks apart the
following year, about 18 months after Dick’s death.
During this difficult time, I completed a Business
Studies Course and started working for Gambro, a
Renal company in Castle Hill. I was in customer
service and looked after the administration side of
patients who were on dialysis.
I was working at Gambro, when I met Ross, just
before the death of my parents. We married 5
years later, and I was truly blessed for a second
time. We had 30 wonderful years together. Ross
was owner/managing director of a commercial
furniture manufacturing business at St Mary’s,
Better Cut Services P/L and we lived in Glenhaven.
We travelled a lot with his business until he
became too ill to travel. I became his carer until
his death in February 2020. At one stage late
2013, Ross spent 14 months in Westmead
Hospital, he was always so positive and grateful
for the amazing care he received there and never
complained throughout his illness.
