Habit Tracking
Your aim is to build good sustainable habits and break
bad ones. Habit tracking can kickstart a new habit plus
keep you on track for things you tend to forget or let
slide when things get busy. It simply reminds you to act.
Habit formation is a long game so while you are waiting
for the desired behaviour change it is motivating to see
how consistent your efforts are.
Your daily habits are tracked in your daily journal but you
also have the option to collate the data for each month
and phase on a simple calendar. You cross off or shade
each day when you complete the habits. Once you have
built up a visual long streak of success there is an
increased desire not to break it. This visual representation
is the best way to see how committed you are and any
patterns that emerge. You can see at a glance if you are
making progress or you need to change course.
When you do miss a day the most important thing is to
recover quickly and make sure you do the next day. As
James Clear suggests in ‘Atomic Habits’ “missing once is
an accident, missing twice is the start of a new habit”. Life
is messy just get back on track.
You may prefer the immediacy of technology to track
your habits. You can get several habit tracker Apps for
your phone to do this.
