Chapter 9: Bidding unbalanced hands
Now let us consider the times that you have an unbalanced hand. We
are still assuming that partner does not raise your suit when you open.
General points.
First we have an important rule
When you have opened 1 of a suit, if partner bids in a
new suit, you MUST bid again.
We also have to remember the important things about responder’s
values -
Responder must bid with 6 or more points;
With 6 or more points responder can bid a new suit at the one
level;
Responder can bid a new suit at the two level with 10 or more
points
If responder cannot comply with point 2 or point 3 he must bid
1NT. This is called “the bucket bid”.
We have to split the hands into three types.
Type 1. Hands that we cannot underwrite game when partner responds in
a new suit or with 1NT. With this type of hand the opener keeps any
rebid, if any, as low as possible sometimes ignoring a second suit if that
would take the bidding too high.
Type 2. Hands that are invitational to game when partner responds in a
new suit at the one level or with 1NT. With this type of hand it is
sometimes safe to rebid a suit with a jump or support partner with a jump.
Otherwise opener keeps the bidding as low as possible.
Type 3. Hands that are worth game of some sort when partner responds
in a new suit or with 1NT. With this type of hand opener can afford to bid
