game or make a rebid that uses a lot of room. These are notorious for
being difficult to handle we will treat them separately later.
Type 1 hands.
With these hands we are not strong enough to even invite game with
what we know about partner’s hand already. However, once partner has
responded with a new suit we MUST bid again as partner might conceal
considerable extra strength (Note that the same is not true if partner
responds 1NT because we know that in this case he is 9 points maximum).
These hands are the bread and butter of bidding so it is very important
that we learn to bid them correctly.
You correctly open 1Ì and if your partner bids 1Í or Í A
1NT you should bid 2Ë and show your other suit. Ì A K 7 5 4
While it is true that a bid of 2Ì would specifically show at Ë J 8 7 3

least five cards you have implied 5+ hearts and 4+ diamonds
here and partner should assume as such. If you were 4-4 you would be
either balanced and opened or rebid in notrump or, with 4-4-4-1 you
would have rebid 2Ê.
Again you open 1Ì and partner bids - Í K J 10 5

to 2Í. A limit bid that is not forcing. Ê 10 5
1NT - now you have no fit and no hope of game so pass
now. Notice that because 1NT is a limit bid you can pass but you
cannot pass a 1Í response.
Again you open 1Ì and partner bids - Í J 8
1Í - now you have a choice. You could bid 2Ê showing your Ì A K 7 5 4
