Because North is not in the 12-14 range he must
open his longest suit. North’s longest suit is hearts, South
so 1Ì is the correct opening in our style as with 4 Í K J 6 4
cards in a major and a minor we open the major. Ì J 10 8

South has 13 points and so could bid a new suit
freely. However, in this case his longest suit is spades and so his bid is 1Í.
North now shows a balanced 15-17 by rebidding 1NT (a non-forcing
limit bid). Finally, South, who can underwrite game, discounts a slam and
bids 3NT.

South’s 2NT shows 15-19 points and is
FORCING (15+ and 10+ must be enough for game).
With a minimum and a balanced hand 3NT should be quite enough
and this is North’s bid.
