spades we will go down but the more likely lead is the ÊJ. We must reduce
the losers. We have fewer clubs than diamonds and so cash that suit
discarding a spade. We can now play a trump and when we regain the lead
draw their trumps (2 rounds) and claim making 3 clubs, 3 diamonds and 5
hearts.
NOTICE: If we ruff something in East we still have the 4 trump tricks
that we started with but if we ruff in West we still make the 4 tricks we
started with plus the 1 ruff in the short hand.
Take ruffs in the short hand to make extra tricks.
Hand 3
This hand emphasises why points (4 Í K Q J 10 3

them up and then get to dummy after
drawing the opponents trumps we will have 3 tricks by length. We also
might have a slow trick by position in clubs if the Ace is with West.
Loser check. We have 2 hearts but, if we draw their trumps, we will have
nothing to ruff the 2 clubs in North hand.
Manage. Go "game in spades". Win as soon as we can. Play Ace then
King of Diamonds and then ruff a diamond with the 10. Now break the
rule about “honours from the short hand first” because we need to draw 3
rounds of trumps ending in dummy and run diamonds discarding 3
clubs.
