Total 9.
Add tricks from other sources (P. L. P.). We have at least 1 trick by length
in trumps because even if the opponents trump break 4-0 our fifth one
will be a winner.
Loser check. We have one losing spade and a club loser. We can take care
of the others so long as we have to play only 3 rounds of trumps to draw
the opponents trumps.
Manage the hand. We are going to win the lead as soon as we can and
draw their trumps (3 rounds) so count carefully. Then we are going to play
diamonds (honours from the short hand first) and ruff the third diamond.
Okay, declare "game in hearts" and make 11 tricks.
Hand 4
This hand again demonstrates just

Count out quick tricks by power. 2 hearts
3 diamonds and a club. Only 6 so far.
Add tricks from other sources (P. L. P.). We have 4 tricks by length in
diamonds and a possible trick by length or position in clubs.
Loser check. We have 2 losers in clubs and a possible third in the same
suit. Okay let us take a bit of a gamble and “go game in diamonds”.
Manage the hand. We are going to win the probable spade lead and draw
our opponents trumps remembering “honours from the short hand first”.
We then play a club to the Jack . When we regain the lead we play Ace and
another club. The 3-3 break sees us home with 11 tricks.
