Week 4 hand analysis.
Hand 1
This hand is used to get us into the idea
Í K 10 4 2
of having a trump suit at bridge. Ì A J 2
It looks like South should declare for Ë J 7 3
game but if we play in notrump and after the Ê K J 10
Í 7 6 3 Í J 8
Ë4 lead East will win the Ace and return the
Ì 7 6 Ì 10 8 3
suit and the E/W pair cashes 5 diamond
Ë K Q 9 4 2 Ë A 8 6
tricks. To put that another way, we have no Ê 9 8 3 Ê Q 6 4 2
guard on the diamond gate. Í A Q 9 5
So, we should look for a trump contract 13 Ì K Q 9 4
and as we have 8 spades between us they 5 7 Ë 10 5
15 Ê A 7 5
would make a good trump suit. These
trumps can guard the diamond gate.
When in a trump contract we keep C. A. L. M.
Count the quick tricks by power. 3 spades, 4 hearts (honours from the
short hand first) and 2 clubs. Total 9.
Add tricks from other sources. (P. L. P.) We have 2 tricks by length in
spades, because if we draw the opponents trumps (3-2 most of the time)
we can use the others separately to trump things. Total - 11
Loser check. We have 2 diamond losers and a possible club loser. That is
okay because game in spades (a major) is 10 tricks and so we are allowed
to lose 3.
Manage the hand. We are going to win as soon as possible and counting
carefully we are going to play enough trumps to run the opponents out (3
rounds in this case) We then will play hearts (honours from the short hand
first).
Okay, declarer "game in spades" and make 11 tricks.
