Bones also contain minerals like calcium and phosphorus.

Parts of the Skeleton

The skeleton has different parts. Let us learn about them.

Skull

The skull is the hard, bony structure that makes up our

head and face. It is made up of 22 bones joined

together. The lower jaw is the only movable part of the
skull. It also enables us to speak. The skull protects the Skull
delicate brain.

Backbone (Vertebral Column)

The backbone supports the body and gives protection to

the spinal cord. The backbone is also known as the

spine. It is made of 33 small and hollow bones called
vertebrae. These bones are arranged over each other
and form a tube-like structure. Discs of cartilage separate

bones of the backbone. It helps us to bend and turn.

Rib Cage & Sternum

Twelve pair of ribs make a cage around the chest

called the rib cage. The rib cage protects the
heart, lungs and liver. The ribs are attached to the
vertebral column at the back and to the

breastbone, also called sternum, in the front.

However, the last two pairs of ribs are joined only
to the vertebral column but not to the sternum.
These are called floating ribs. Rib Cage

The ribs are curved in shape and are flexible. This is the reason why our chest
moves in and out when we breathe in and out.
