SPRING CONFERENCE WRAPUP
By Don Harris
Dave Davlin’s Keynote Presentation a Slam Dunk
Dave Davlin
Dave Davlin demonstrated his skill
with basketballs as he charted a path
to success in life.
Davlin, keynote speaker at AASBO’s
Spring Conference on April 3, said
the keys are the person you become,
the memories you create and the
difference you make in somebody.
“It’s not what you do, it’s how
you do it,” said Davlin, who was a
halftime act for the NBA, dribbling,
juggling and spinning basketballs. His
halftime antics gave people pleasant
memories.
“What people remember the most
are things that make you laugh,”
he said. He then brought up to the
stage AASBO members Dale Ponder
and Bobby Williams, putting one in
a knife-throwing scare that didn’t
happen and an apple-eating episode
that did. “Sweet Georgia Brown” and
the theme from “Jaws” played in the
background.
Davlin mentioned “Game Winning
3,” which is the title of his book, and
recalled hearing a kid in Texas say,
“Three, two, one.” Then he heard
the familiar sound of a basketball
bouncing off a rim.
“I smiled, but mostly I remembered
what it’s like to have a dream to hit
the winning shot, to be a hero, to
bring home the trophy. That means
something to a basketball player.”
Davlin said there was a time when
every AASBO member in the room
wanted to be a hero. But, as we get
older, we start to lose that passion.
“For every one of us, there is still an
opportunity out there to be a hero,” he
said. “It comes down to three things –
the person you become, the memories
you create and difference you make.”
