Breaking the “just-a” Mentality

Description:
School districts face enormous challenges like insuf-
ficient funding, classroom size, bullying, safety, reg-
ulations and laws, parental involvement, shrinking
enrollment, constantly changing standards, testing,
politics, privatization, distance learning and on and on.
Sometimes our support staff has great ideas in these
areas, but are not included in problem solving – after
all, they are “just-a driver” or “just-a-groundsman”
or “just-a-plumber” or “just-a-technician.” What are
some strategies that we can use to break the “just-a”
mind set and be part of the solution?

Bio:
Dr. Walter B. “Skip” Brown is a retired Army lieutenant colo-
nel who found the perfect second career in education. For 18
years he was Director of Transportation and later Assistant
Superintendent for Support Services and Planning for the
Paradise Valley Unified School District. He joined AASBO in
1990 and has been active ever since. He is currently a Se-
nior Project Manager for Valley Schools Management Group,
and sole proprietor for Brown Consulting.
