Corporate Governance
In terms of good governance principles and and measures the institution’s performance
practices, UNAM’s Council provides oversight through effective risk management and greater
to ensure accountable management and stakeholder engagement. UNAM subscribes to
adherence to strong internal controls by good governance principles as laid out in the
management. Council effectively monitors King IV report, as well as NAMCODE.
Composition of Council
The governance and executive authority of the University is vested in the Council, which consists of
the following:
• Vice Chancellor
• Pro-vice Chancellors
• Not more than six persons appointed by the president of the Republic of Namibia
• Four members of the Senate, appointed by Senate
• Two persons representing the alumni of the University
• Permanent Secretary (now executive director): Ministry of Education
• Permanent Secretary (now executive director): Ministry of Finance
• One person appointed by the Council of the Municipality of Windhoek
• One person elected by the administrative staff of the University
• Two persons, not resident in Namibia, knowledgeable on matters relating to higher education,
appointed by majority members of the Council
• Two students representing the Students’ Representative Council
