           1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 PREAMBLE AND BACKGROUND TO THE TOPIC

I give all glory to God Almighty and thank the Management of the University
of Namibia (UNAM) for the privilege to give this inaugural lecture. This is the
first ever Inaugural Lecture to be delivered from the Department of Physics
and the second to be delivered from the Faculty of Science since the
University came into existence in 1992. I should also take this opportunity to
thank the UNAM Management for appointing me as the Head of Physics
Department for eleven (11) consecutive years (January 2001 - December
2011) and for awarding me the Meritorious Award for Best Academic Staff
Member of the University of Namibia in 2013. Also, I was appointed the
University of Namibia Agent for the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA) projects in Namibia many years ago and I received a letter of
commendation from the Vice-Chancellor some years ago.

Director of Ceremony, I would like to inform you that these appointments
and award and commendation have positive effects on my performance
in teaching, research and community service at UNAM, and consequently
           on this Professorial inaugural lecture.
