Using the Duncan Loop (a.k.a. Uni-
Knot)
by Tom Keer
It would figure that one of my favorite knots has three different names.
The original name for the multiple overhand knot was the Gallows Knot,
and it was first published in 1944. Later, in the early 1960s, a man named
Norman Duncan twisted it up, and did so without knowing that what he
thought was his knot had already been written about. That was the knot I
learned to tie, and I knew it as the Duncan Loop. About a decade later in
the 1970s, Vic Dunaway, a fishing editor from Florida, wrote about the
Duncan Loop and referred to it as the Uni-Knot. Call it what you will, it’s
still the same great knot. And these days, the Uni-Knot may be more
fitting. Why? It’s universal, in many regards. The knot ties well with
monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided line. It is equally useful across
all fishing disciplines. Use it when fishing with live bait; tie on a plug,
spinner, or spoon; or use it with a variety of flies.
