Nail Knot
Use a small nail—hence the knot’s name, used in this style of tying as
popularized by the great Joe Brooks of Outdoor Life, but known to be
developed by Florida Keys fishing guide Jimmie Albright—as the
foundation around which to form this knot.
1. Make seven wraps around the line and the nail, as shown here.
2. Bring the tag end back through the gap provided by the nail, again
as shown here.
3. Withdraw the nail and pull the tag end of the line. Make sure the
wraps stay lined up neatly, and don’t bunch up. Bunched wraps can
cause knot failure.
4. Here’s the finished knot with the tag clipped. Some anglers add
super glue (cyanoacrylate adhesive) over the wraps to ensure that
they don’t separate.
