16-year-old daughter Elvira, thought it was a fantastic idea to take a boat trip down the
coast to Dragør, a charming fishing town on the other side of Zealand.
The trip would take about two hours, and they planned to enjoy fish from the popular fish
market at Dragør Harbor. Today, the harbor was bustling with activity. Edward and Elvira
eagerly greeted other sailors, many of whom they knew from their regular Wednesday trips
to sail optimist dinghies. During the summer, Elvira would often take charge, navigating
their small boat.
As they prepared for departure, Edward and Elvira chatted about her experiences in high
school, how she was adjusting, and what she enjoyed most. Elvira often brought her
boyfriend or friends along on their trips, making it a lively family affair. Edward, ever the
devoted father, always tried to stay updated on everyone in the family. This included his
daily calls to Phoebe in the U.S. When little Naja’s due date had been set, he had dropped
everything to prepare.
Edward placed a reassuring arm around his wife, smiling warmly. “Hey, Vic, let’s take it
easy. The boat is designed for seven people.”
“Vic” was Victoria’s nickname but only used in the family’s private moments—not in the
presence of others.
Shortly after, the family was aboard and ready to sail. Edward and Elvira, accustomed to
working together, set the sails effortlessly. The small boat began gliding smoothly out of
the peaceful harbor lined with bright, moored vessels.
Victoria and Elvira sat aft, close to Edward, who steered the boat with ease. As they
reached open water, Victoria gazed at the calm sea, finally allowing herself to relax.
“Yes, in weather like this, I can understand why you enjoy this,” she said softly, letting out a
small laugh.
Edward immediately picked up on the positive shift in her tone. “You should come out with
us more often,” he replied, his enthusiasm evident.
Phope turns her head half and raises a thumb in the air and responds with a big grin. They
lie not far from the shore, the small boat rocking gently southward with Edward at the
helm. Elvira sits beside him on the railing, her long hair blowing softly in the breeze.
Normally, when they sail together, Elvira is the one allowed to steer the boat out of the
harbor, and once they’ve set their course, they take turns navigating. But today is different.
