In a matter of seconds, they have him aboard, and the couple steadies him as he rushes to
the edge. Below, the water churns as he tries to make sense of the chaos, hoping against
hope that he isn’t too late to rescue his friends.
The man gestures with his arms towards him and throws out a life jacket, he discovers that
there are several life buoys around him and more boats are on their way from all sides.
Instead of reaching for the lifebuoy, Edward continues to swim around toward the bow of
the boat. As he approaches, something catches his eye—a dark streak of blood running
down the side of the boat. For a moment, he’s confused, but the next wave of exhaustion is
already hitting him hard. The waves have finally stopped, though, and the sea is beginning
to settle. Just as he begins to feel overwhelmed with fatigue, he notices out of the corner of
his eye that the man who had thrown the lifebuoy is now standing on the bow of his boat,
ready to jump into the water.
Edward, too tired to move faster, forces himself to keep going. And then, as if in slow
motion, he spots something floating in the water beside the boat—a familiar, lifeless
shape. His heart skips a beat. It’s Elvira. He swims toward her with what little strength he
has left, fighting the relentless pull of exhaustion.
When he reaches her, he first sees her legs, lifeless and still, partially submerged in the
water. The sight chills him to the bone. He pushes with everything he’s got, and his eyes
scan her body. Her face emerges from the surface, and what he sees sends a wave of
horror crashing over him—her eyes are wide open, her mouth slightly agape, but she is
motionless.
"Elvira!" he shouts desperately, but there’s no response. His voice shakes with fear.
