anymore. No, his new passion was ethnography and archaeology. He no longer
cared for the research behind the police-work, it seemed monotonous and a
waste of time. Perhaps it was the nagging feeling in his, that made him feel the
people around him was limited in talent, if not to say outright stupid.
"You're too rigid and uneasy. A real OCD case, that’s for sure," that was the last
of Mina's comments, as she sought a divorce.
She was quite unhappy in their relationship; Tom’s lack of presence at home,
not knowing how long the cases would last, made her angry. She believed his
desire to perform as an agent, were the reason why she hadn’t become pregnant.
Mina became pregnant with Jens after they were divorced. They had briefly met
each other by chance, a rare occasion. The last time they met was just before
Christmas. They ran into each other at Strøget, a busy high street in Copenhagen,
as they both did their Christmas-shopping. Mina had become round and gentle
due to her recently giving birth. Shortly after her maternity, she chose to quit her
job at the police force; instead she wanted to try her skills in the field of a social
worker. At the time, when they lived together, around their mid-twenties, she
had been full of admiration for Tom and his career, but since then when he
slowly transformed into a secret agent in the recent years, she felt uninvolved.
Yes, she enjoyed the trips to southern France every year and the luxury cars he
drove her around in, having the opportunity to live in fashionable flats on the
Riviera, but it wasn’t enough to make them stay together, she missed the
tenderness of the early years, they slowly drifted apart. They did everything they
could to get a child, but it all failed, and that eventually led Mina to seek a
divorce.
"It's so great to have you back," says Olina, interrupting his thought flow.
"I know I've said it sometimes, but it really means a lot to me to get this stupid
thing resolved properly."
Her words hit him like a frosty snowball right in the face; he's back and now has
to solve another case. His thoughts had taken him somewhere else. Perhaps what
bothers him most about this particular case is that it’s not the usual reckless
buffoons he chases, quite the contrary, it is intelligent individuals who know
what they’re doing. He has to deal with this case properly; it’s not just routine.
“Try to relax. You look completely exhausted…. Almost anxious,” says Bjørn.
