men stood in front of the barn that the top staff used for briefings. At the

entrance, two guards shared a cigarette.

                   "Come on," commanded one.
The sergeant said his name and title, and then made honors.

"I will now present out new adjudicator for General Hahn."

The guard nodded, stepped aside to let them pass.

In his mind, Peter Eberhardt imagined the look on his mother and grandfather’s
faces. If they only knew how fast he rose in the military ranks.

The first to speak was Lieutenant Colonel Fischer.

"General Major Hahn has unfortunately lost his adjudicator."
                   Peter Eberhardt nodded eagerly.

"Mr. Colonel Lieutenant. At your service, sir" he answered with a loud voice.

Lt. Col. Fischer continued with his deep voice:
"Very well. You did excellent at your time at the front. No further remarks."

Peter wondered if Fischer's bulky stomach was due to spirits. He actually

swelled up. Once Peter noticed Fischer’s shaking hands, he was no longer in
doubt. Movements that the Lt. Col. tried to suppress by holding one hand pinched

                   tight on the other.

The most peculiar thing was Fischer’s small, almost childish eyes. Deeply buried
behind his thick and swollen cheeks. He also had a tiny mouth. He had a baldpate

                   – almost bare. His looks resembled a professor or a teacher, more than a military
                   officer, Peter thought.

Next to Lt. Col. Fischer was Colonel Stockel. His opposition. He was tall, slender,

with a crew cut, and feared. Peter Eberhardt has heard stories about him. Colonel
Stockel measured and commanded punitive punishment. Rumor said he was

anything but gentle. Now he looked apathetic in front of him and struggled to

                   suppress a yawn.
Jürgen Hahn emerged from an adjacent room and nodded against Peter, who

saluted. There was a bang as he clasped his heels together.
"I've seen his papers," Hahn explained to the colonel.

"It’s all right. Let him start right away." With two centimeters short, it was just

only that Peter Eberhardt completed the military session. His weight was
