heart-shaped face, the gentle facial features and the fine thin hair had certain
similarities with a fragile porcelain doll.
Dr. Stimmel, the military physician had his qualms when the thin boy stood in
front of him heavily disease ridden. The doctor knew that it would cost him the
job if he discarded any youths, even if they didn’t match the criterion in height
and muscle. They could still prove useful. Eventually, his work as a physician
became more of a title. The work he did seemed less important than before.
With a sigh, he stamped his papers and thereby deeming him suitable for service.
As the young man was leaving, Stimmel shouted:
"I would’ve discarded you three years ago."
Jürgen Hahn knew Inga Eberhardt, Peter’s mother. She went to the Bavarian
School, like he did, some years behind. Occasionally they greeted each other
when they casually met on a stroll with their respective families. He knew they
were decent people. Inga Eberhardt's husband was active in the national-
socialist movement. He was a little older than his wife, and according to rumors,
had died in relation with his work by the railroad.
The general superintendent wasn’t bothered too much about the tragic fates of
others. He had more than enough on his own plate.
A couple of weeks ago, his adjutant had been deported because of serious illness.
Hopefully the little scrawny naive boy would put extra work in because of their
common background. By the way, Hahn much preferred to work with southern
Germans, as they were more much cultivated and refined.
Chapter 8
Thursday, November 28, 1941. The day Jürgen Hahn never forgot.
Early in the morning, Colonel Lieutenant Fischer came rushing in and fiercely
woke him up.
"They are rewarded, Mr. General. We are getting rewarded. See for yourself."
Quivering of cold and eagerness at the same time, Fischer waved with a piece of
paper towards him.
