A year ago, he never held a gun. Now he was a skilled shooter - to his mother

disapproval had she still been here.

                   Chapter 13

SS general Major Bernard Ferst pulled his handkerchief out of his right jacket

pocket, not to brush his nose but to wipe under his eyes. His nose had been
destroyed in battle. On top of what was left of the nose, a metal prosthesis was

shaped like a triangle with two holes in the bottom served as his nostrils.
A leather cord ran through small holes next to the prosthesis and ended in a tight

knot on the back of the head. The artificial nose gave him a tough and brutal

expression that suited him and his personality.
A pair of glasses rested on the metal nose. He adjusted them and studied his

                   fingers.

He wasn’t the type who showed weakness when being sick, but from dawn he
felt quite ill. He raised his pocket watch. It gave a little safe click, as he opened

the clock. With his index finger, he circled around the elegant gold cravings on
the watch, which was a gift from his father-in-law.

If everything went well, he could be home again in about ten hours. He clinched

his already narrow and dull lips together and fought the urge to change the
position, even though he was in a bad one.

"Hurry! I want this to be over quickly. Understood?"
He did not lift his eyes but still looked down on his watch.

The chauffeur nodded firmly, straightened his cap and then proceed to speed.

The other vehicles with SS people: sturmführer Peter Hanstein, sturmführer
Frank Wahl, standartenführer Morten Fleisch, SS Schütze Kevin Fried and the

two adjudicators Sacher and Wartenberg set the speed and, and the little

cardigan drove at high speed through the streets of Munich.
As the only one, Standardsführer Herman Osten sat in the car with the General

major, and after half an hour of driving, he broke the silence.
"We really are in the country now."
