His father didn’t care for what was happening on the ground. His only interest
was if the Nazis were pleased with the work Dieter did. Nevertheless, the field
had been broken for many years, and his father had a good payment.
Dieter suspected that his father perceived the task as Dieter's great chance of
showing that he was the man. Do not you think that the Nazis were happy that
they could concentrate on other important tasks?
He was aware that Standartenführer, Herman Osten, immediately would turn up
at the far, if a problem were to be found. He overheard his father saying to the
men that as long as there was not a single piece of art on the farm, it was only
greater assistance if Dieter took care of the excavation guarded by a handful of
soldiers.
"Trouble. What do you mean by that mean?"
"They have thrown their shovels and refuse to dig. It’s the third day in a row that
we have these problems. They are many. After all, we are only six men. "
"Go back and act as if nothing happened."
"Water, water," came as a meek sound from the hole.
Dieter drew his gun. No one had noticed him. Everyone concentrated on the man
who collapsed.
“As if he really was fatigued…” Dieter thought with contempt.
He took aim - and shot. The recoil hit the sand a few centimeters from the
worker who held the head of his friend who collapsed.
"Shut up. You work on until I say there is a break. "
With the gun, Dieter pointed to a little guy in ragged overalls.
"Pick up and get a dunk of water. And then see you to it you get started again. "
For a moment there was a numbing silence in the hole. Then the men
immediately began digging again. Soon after finishing the first hole.
Back on his lookout, Dieter turned his eye to the west. Glimpsing the Italian Alps.
Then he looked to the east, seeing contours of church spires and towers from a
nearby medieval city. He sank a lump of regret and thought of his mother. His
mother loved this view so much.
Everything changed since she died.
