Daegu Sinmyeong High School was started in 1907 by Martha Scott Bruen, the
wife of Henry Munro Bruen, a missionary from Presbyterian Church of U.S.A.,
at her residence in Namsan-dong (current, Dongsan-dong) under the name of
Sinmyeon Girls’ Middle School. The main building was relocated in the current
location and was built with bricks in 1913.
During the March 1st Movement, students actively participated in the
independence movement under the direction of teacher Lee Jae-in. In 2004,
when it changed to coeducational, its name was changed to Sinmyeong High
School. Sinmyeong High School aims to create Christian culture. To achieve
this goal, it has been striving to educate people to be upright, talented, active,
social, and global.

Sawol Church
Sawol Church began on November 21, 1898 when about 10 people, including Kim Myung-
geun and his wife and Park Tae-bok’s mother, gathered to worship at the house of Kim
Myung-geun in Maeho-dong (then Gosan-myeon, Gyeongsan-gun) inviting missionary J. E. Adams.
In 1902, the church was relocated by purchasing a three-spaces of thatched house in
Sawol-dong, where many of the church members lived. According to the “Chosun Yesugyo
Presbyterian Church”, it is recorded as a church established in 1901.
Please take a closer look at the early history. Kim Gyeong-soo, who first preached the
gospel in Cheongdo, Gyeongsangbuk-do and Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, was also
from Sawol Church. Kim Gyeong-soo, a native of Cheongdo, came to a market in Daegu
as he met missionary J. E. Adams, and became a Christian and preached the gospel to
his hometown of Cheongdo and Miryang, where his relatives lived. After missionary J. E.
Adams, missionary Henry Munro Bruen was in charge of the Sawol Church since 1905. He
Daegu Sinmyeong High School rode a bicycle around city and people called the bicycle “an eyeglasses-horse.”
