Jeonju Presbyterian Medical Center began in 1898 when M. Ingold, a female missionary
from Presbyterian Church in the United State, opened an outpatient clinic for women.
It started with the aim of becoming a witness to Christ by carrying out medical care and
missionary work in the name of Jesus Christ. In 1949, the hospital started to train medical
doctors, and in 1950, a nursing school was established to produce many nurses.
In 1971, the Jeonju Presbyterian Medical Center Maintenance Foundation was established,
and a new hospital (with 253 beds) was built. The hospital worked on the community health
by establishing Gosan Branch, an affiliated clinic with 10 beds, in 1982 and establishing
clinics in other doctorless villages. It also has been providing treatment for the patients with
extreme poverty and vocational rehabilitation training. In particular, a radiation treatment
center was established in 1985 to actively treat cancer patients.

“Its purpose is to become a witness of Jesus Christ by conducting
medical care and missionary work in the name of Jesus Christ in order
to contribute to the health and welfare of the people.”

the spirit of independence even under Japanese rule. As refusing shrine worship, the school
was voluntarily closed on October 5, 1937.
With the liberation in 1945, the school reopened on November 26, 1946 with school
