Jenae Church
“Jenae Church started with 13 people at Elder
Kim Sung-sik’s house in Mandong Village on March 5, 1900.”
Jenae Church started in 1900 in Mandong Village
in Jenae-ri, Bongdong-eup, Wanju-gun, where
13 people gathered to worship. A three-room
thatched house was built as a chapel in April
1903, and missionary Luther Oliver McCutchen
from Carolina, the U.S., served as the first pastor
in 1904. In Jenae Church, there are traces of
martyrs. During the Korean War in 1950, elder
Kim Sang-cheon and elder Kim Hyun-kyung
were martyred and elder Hwang Hae-ju suffered
bullet wounds. A monument to martyrs stands at
the entrance of the church.

Im Gwang-ho, the founder of the Hari
Evangelical Holiness Church, was born on
March 15, 1923 in Hwanghae Province. While
working as an evangelist after studying theology
in Manchuria with the support of his father,
a doctor, and his mother, an evangelist, the
communist party of Kim Il-sung with atheism
and historical materialism was in power over
northern part of 38th parallel north, so Im
Gwang-ho come to South for religious freedom.
When the church was revived spiritually, it was
persecuted by local communists.
Originally, Wari, Samnye-eup, has been in
dispute between Japanese farmers and tenant
Korean farmers since the 1920s, and it was a
place where communists intervened and there
were many local communists, so Communist
activities were active enough to refer to it as
Moscow of South Korea, and 8,000 people
gathered at a rally against the establishment
of the Korean government in February 1948
after liberation. Evangelist Im Gwang-ho came
to Hari and founded and revived Hari Church
with the support of Samrye Evangelical Holiness
Church (Pastor Cho Seok-woo) , and the Korean War
broke out while building a chapel. Asked to
be evacuated, Evangelist Im refused to take
refuge, saying “Where would the shepherd go
leaving his sheep?” 7 days before the ceremony
of putting up the ridge beam of the church, he
was abducted by local communists who gained
strength through the Invasion from North Korea
of the Communist Party on July 10. He was
martyred under Wolsan-ri Rock while preaching
the gospel to the communists.
