Since the concept of martyrdom is not yet clearly defined within the Korean churches, it is
difficult to say whether missionary Appenzeller’s death was a martyrdom or not. Missionary A school for nurturing Bible Woman

Hanil University and Presbyterian Theological Seminary started as a school for nurturing Bible
Woman in Gwangju by Elisabeth Johanna Shepping, a female teacher, on June 2, 1922. The
following year, the Women’s Bible School was founded in Jeonju on September 4, 1923, and was
constructed in 155 beonji, Junghwasan-dong 1-ga with teacher offertory for new construction
made by Mr. ＆ Mrs. Thedres Hamilton's in USA in 1928 and after naming the school ‘Jeonju
Hamilton Bible School’, students were educated. Since then, the bible schools in Gwangju and
Jeonju were closed down in September and October of 1940 after rejecting shrine worship but
were re-opened in August 1945 following the defeat of the Japanese. Jeonju Hamilton Bible
School was approved as Jeonju Higher Bible School in 1952 and while providing better level of
education, the school was renamed to ’Jeonju Hamilton Biblical Theological Seminary' in 1956
and was approved as Miscellaneous School pursuant to the High School Decree by Jeollabuk-
do Board of Education. In April 1961, ‘Jeonju Hanil Theological Seminary’ named by taking
‘Han’ from Jeonju Hamilton Bible School and ‘Il’ from Gwangju Neel Bible School were merged
and an American missionary, Go Inae was inaugurated as the founding principal. In July 1967,
approval for change of name from ‘Hanil Theological Seminary’ to ‘Hanil Women’s Theological
Seminary’ was obtained from the Jeollabuk-do Board of Education. In October 1974, Pastor
Kang, Taekhyeon was inaugurated as the 1st Dean and in September 1978, it was ratified as a
Gunsan Appenzeller’s Martyrdom Memorial Church provincial theological school by the General Assembly of Presbyterian Church in Korea (Tonghap) .
