seven selected missionaries from the American Southern Presbyterian Mission who
started the mission with a phrase ‘God Sends us to Joseon’
On the way to the museum located in Junghwa-dong, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeollabuk-do,
you will find many Christian historic sites, including Jeonju Presbyterian Medical Center,
which make pilgrims deeply moved. The museum displays historical records and relics of

Memorial of Jeonju the first missionary site in Honam since the opening of Jeonju Mission by seven selected
Seomoon Church missionaries from the American Southern Presbyterian Mission who started the mission
with a phrase, “God Sends to Joseon”, up to these days. The museum displays six themes
including; “Preparing Honam’s First Mission Site in Jeonju”, “Eun Song-ri Chapel, where
the first baptism was held”, “Spreading Christianity through gospel, medical care, and
education”, “Christianity Changes the World”, “Remember Missionaries worked in Jeonju”.
Also, other major events were shown in animations as well as exhibitions, so visitors
can look back upon the missionaries’ footprints and commemorate them. There is also
Crane Memorial Medical Museum which was renovated from Medical Museum of Jeonju
Presbyterian Medical Center, and the multipurpose
Jeonju Seomoon Church The bell turret of the first church in
Honam region, Seomoon Church auditorium with 70 seats on the 4th floor is used
for worship, lectures, and seminars.
“It is the first church in the Honam region established by Jeong Hae-won
in 1893 after being sent by William D. Reynolds, a missionary
from the American Southern Presbyterian Mission.”
In June 1893, Jeong Hae-won who was sent by William D. Reynolds, a missionary from
the American Southern Presbyterian Mission, purchased a thatched house in Eunsong-ri,

In July 1897, five people were baptized for the first time. In September 1905, the church
moved to its current location and purchased 2580㎡ of land and built a 165㎡ tiled-roof
brick chapel. In August 1908, Kim Pil-soo was appointed as an elder, and the session
was organized. In December of the same year, the bell turrent was built to commemorate
missionary Junkin, who died while spreading gospel in various regions of Jeollabuk-do.
In the 1920s, the church also took the lead in cultivating talent by opening women’s night
